TSI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting awareness and mitigation of the adverse impact of tsunamis on humanity.
The Society furthers the concept that tsunamis have a common adverse impact that transcends national boundaries and interests and, therefore, encourages regional and international cooperation for research, education and preparedness. To meet these objectives we depend solely upon tax-deductible donations from sponsors like you.
Since 1982, the Society has been publishing, free of charge, its Open Access scholarly journal, “ SCIENCE OF TSUNAMI HAZARDS”, the only peer-reviewed journal in the world specifically dedicated to the dissemination of knowledge about tsunamis and programs of preparedness. To facilitate contributions from scientists from all over the world and from developing countries, the society requires no author publishing fees and maintains affordable professional membership dues.
Contributions of any amount are welcome. For donations of $50 or more, decorative electronic, printable Certificates of Appreciation, suitable for framing, are issued. Please specify name and email address.

MANDATE
The International Tsunami Society (ITS) promotes the awareness and mitigation of tsunami hazards by its sponsorship of workshops, meetings and symposia and by disseminating knowledge about tsunamis to scientists, officials, the media and the public through the publication of its “free access”, international scholarly journal "Science of Tsunami Hazards", a home page, and other venues. The Society provides a focus for discussion and interactions among its members, government agencies and the public.
The primary objective of the International Tsunami Society is to mitigate the adverse impact of tsunamis on humanity. ITS is a non-profit organization that has no sponsor to financially support these activities. It relies entirely on memberships and contributions to carry its mandate and perform the following functions:
FUNCTIONS
Encourages collaborative, multidisciplinary research related to the tsunami hazards for the purpose of promoting education, training, public awareness and implementation of early warning systems that can save lives around the world and safeguard property. More specifically - and particularly after the tragic (2004) Tsunami Disaster in the Indian Ocean - the Society :
a) Promotes the concept that tsunamis have a common adverse impact on Mankind that transcends national boundaries and interests and, therefore, encourages regional and international cooperation for research, education and preparedness;
b) Promotes the setting up of facilities required for the undertaking of research on tsunamis, based on a holistic multidisciplinary approach that combines theoretical and applied sciences and mathematics, as well as social sciences, to the understanding of the tsunami phenomenon;
c) Promotes the mitigation of the adverse impact of tsunamis on humanity through the implementation and establishment of effective, early warning systems and through programs of education and preparedness;
d) Co-operates with other international scientific organizations, governments, foundations, industries, academic institutions and other professional groups concerned with the hazards of tsunamis;
e) Acts as a focal point in assisting coordination between research institutions and universities around the world promoting programs of theoretical and applied tsunami research.
f) Supports the organization of training programs, symposiums, workshops, seminars and other meetings to study topics of interest related to tsunami studies and preparedness;
g) Conducts an international Tsunami Symposium every two or three years and, when funds are available, support the participation and training of scientists from developing countries that are at risk from tsunamis and other collateral hazards;
h) Assists governmental and private organizations with the establishment of appropriate liaison mechanisms.
i) Publishes free of charge an international OPEN-ACCESS journal known as SCIENCE OF TSUNAMI HAZARDS" and other reports, books and Symposium Proceedings.

Tsunami Society International is pleased to co-sponsor the 9th US National and 10th Canadian Conference on Earthquake Engineering that is being hosted by EERI and The Canadian Association for Earthquake Engineering. The conference is titled "Reaching Beyond Borders" and will provide an opportunity for both researchers and practitioners to share the latest knowledge and techniques for understanding and mitigating the effects of earthquakes. The conference will be a a unique environment that will facilitate synergy between U.S. and Canadian colleagues, as well as other participants from around the world. This conference will highlight a broad range of disciplines, including architecture, structural engineering, seismology, geology, geophysics, geotechnical engineering, business, public policy, social sciences, regional planning, emergency response planning, and regulation. The Fourth International Tsunami Symposium will be held as the Tsunami Session of the joint conferences.

The meeting included a 3-day Research Symposium covering the basic aspects of the tsunami problem and 1-day Technical Workshop on Tsunami Measurements and Real-Time Detection jointly sponsored by the IUGG Tsunami Commission (IUGG/TC), the National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) NOAA and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) UNESCO.
2009 China Cross-Straits Symposium on the Prevention and Mitigation of Natural Hazards - 19-20 JUNE 2009, FUZHOY, CHINA (Completed)
The Symposium was held in China's south-eastern coastal city of Fuzhou, in Fujian Province from the 19th to 20th June 2009. It was sponsored by the China International Talent Exchange Foundation, the Taiwan K.T.Li Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology, the National Taiwan University, the Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, the Department of Water Resources, the Meteorological Administration, the Earthquake Administration of Fujian Province and the Tsunami Society, and had the strong support of China's National Natural Science Foundation. The objective of the two-day Symposium was to have in-depth communications and discussions on how to effectively mitigate the impact of natural hazards such as typhoons, earthquakes and tsunamis.
